Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: pick up & transfer to Volcanoes National park
Having arrived at Kigali international airport, the driver guide from Authentic Africa Safaris will pick you up and briefly take you through the flow of the itinerary. Start off a drive northwestward to Volcanoes National park, home to Rwanda’s endangered mountain gorillas. The drive time from Kigali to Volcanoes Park is roughly 3 hours through the rolling hills after which the country is named the “Land of a thousand Hills”
Day 2: 1st Gorilla trekking & transfer to Kigali
Have an early morning breakfast and transfer to Kinigi park headquarters of Volcanoes National park. Assemble for registration and briefing on the rules and guidelines of gorilla trekking. You will be entertained by traditional dancers’ abs also served with a cup of hot coffee if you wish. At 8:00 am, transfer to the gorilla trekking starting point and start off the hike into the jungle searching for the allocated gorilla family. Whereas the allowed time to spend with gorillas is an hour, you may spend over 6 hours before you meet the gentle giants due to their continuous movements. Volcanoes National Park is home to the highest number of gorillas in the Virunga conservation area with 10 gorilla families habituated for trekking. Each permit to trek gorillas in Volcanoes National Park costs $1500 which make Rwanda a premier gorilla destination in Africa and the world. The other animals which live in Volcanoes Park include golden monkeys, colobus monkeys, forest elephants and baboons among others. For bird lovers, the park is also home to over 500 birds some of which are endemic to the Albertine region. In the evening, drive back to Kigali city for your overnight stay
Day 3: City tour & transfer to Bwindi Forest National park
Enjoy city tour in Kigali to explore the exceptional beauty and cleanness of this small city. Among the top places to visit in Kigali include Kigali genocide memorial Centre, Kimironko Market, Kigali Convention Centre and art galleries. Have lunch in the city Centre and thereafter drive towards to Cyanika Rwanda Uganda border. Clear with immigration and cross over to Kisoro driving straight to Rushaga sector south of Bwindi impenetrable Forest National park. Relax at the lodge as you prepare for the next day’s trek.
Day 4: 2nd Gorilla trekking & cultural tour
Wake up very early, have a cup of coffee and with your packed lunch drive to Rushaga park headquarters where you will be registered and briefed on the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking. Rushaga sector is home to the high number of gorillas in Bwindi Forest compared to other gorilla regions (Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo. Enjoy an hour with mountain gorillas, embrace the human-like characters of these endangered species, take pictures and have fun with your close relatives. In the evening, visit Batwa communities to learn and experience the traditional life of Batwa pygmies who originally lived with gorillas and other wild animals in the jungle. The batwa pygmies will entertain you with their traditional dances and songs which all tell about their traditions, norms and beliefs. You can also visit local markets to buy crafts and support local businesses which help to improve the standards of living for local people.
Day 5: Transfer to Kampala & Departure
After breakfast, check out f the lodge and depart from Bwindi Forest headed to Kampala for your connecting flight at Entebbe International Airport
